Amulette d’Améthyst

Amethyst Necklace with Antique India High Karat Gold Beads

This faceted amethyst pendant necklace is just plain pretty! The antique high karat gold beads from India and rusty colored spinels offset the lovely violet color of the amethyst and are all hand wrapped in a solid 22K gold package.  The name amethyst comes from the Greek and alludes to their belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. Wear with a crisp white tailored shirt, meet a best friend and a have a glass of wine!

about Amethyst:

Until the 19th century, when large deposits of the gem were discovered in Brazil, amethyst was considered one of the big five gemstones, along with emerald, sapphire, ruby and diamond; and was valued accordingly. The color of royalty and religious hierarchy, this violet hued variety of the quartz mineral species is thought to derive its purple colors from the presence of iron or manganese during crystal formation, although other theories attribute an organic source. Amethyst forms a hexagonal prism crystal terminating in a 6-sided pyramid and specimens can be huge, with multiple individual crystals.

The early Greeks associated amethyst with Bacchus, the god of wine. The name, also derived from the Greek, literally means "not intoxicate" and the ancient Greeks utilized drinking vessels carved from it to prevent intoxication. Some of us may be wise to wear this beautifully colored gem often! Amethyst is the February birthstone and is known as a stone of spirituality. St. Valentine wore a ring of amethyst.

about spinel:

Spinel is one of the most beautiful mineral species and gemstones, unknown to most, and certainly under appreciated. It is one of my favorite gemstones because of its often red trending to magenta color. A red spinel is a compound of magnesia, iron, oxygen and chromium, whereas ruby is a type of aluminum oxide. Spinel can also be blue, violet and pink. Violet to blue spinel can be colored by trace amounts of iron, and vibrant blues owe their saturated color to trace amounts of cobalt.
